Photo by francescolastrucci Early in the morning, two men paddle on their traditional rowboats in Kerala. They are floating in front of the lush banks in a branch of the Ashtamudi Lake, one of the biggest in India and the gateway to one of the best backwater routes in the region.
Meaning “eight cones” in the local Malayalam language because of its topography and its eight branches resembling a palm tree, Ashtamudi Lake is known for its unique wetland system and rich biodiversity. I photographed a series of images of the backwaters immersed in a dreamlike environment: the colors of the fist daylight, the mirroring placid waters, and the echoes of the chants coming from the surrounding temples.
