Due to the steady loss of sea ice resulting from climate change, polar bears are listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Human-bear encounters are increasing in coastal communities because the bears’ natural habitat is eroding. Bears are seen more often, which creates a hard-to-dispel illusion that bear populations are increasing, when in fact the opposite may be true. The best way to minimize human-wildlife conflict is through information and education. Patrols, watchdogs, flares, and electric fencing are very effective.
