Photo by francescolastrucci The night before Dia de Los Muertos, a girl inflates a balloon in front of her house in Oaxaca de Juarez, Mexico. The Day of the Dead, of pre-Hispanic origin and dedicated to loved departed souls, is one of the most important celebrations in the country. The celebration is particularly significant in Oaxaca, where Catholic rituals are mixed with the pre-Colombian elements so strong in the region.
I particularly loved photographing during twilight on this occasion, where I was looking for images that could represent the mysticism hovering in the air. Climbing on one of the densely inhabited hills surrounding the historic center of the city looking for a wider view, I found myself waiting for almost half an hour in front of an illuminated door, beyond which I heard voices coming. Finally and to my surprise, the girl with the balloon gave me the moment of serendipity and magic that I was looking for.
