Photo by daisygilardini | Black bears are the smallest and most numerous of North American bears. They are widely distributed throughout British Columbia, Canada’s westernmost province, except in the big cities.
Conflict with people is common, because of their large numbers and wide distribution. Each year, conservation officers in British Columbia kill up to a thousand black bears, due to conflicts over garbage, farm waste, food found in campgrounds, beehives, and fruit trees.
B.C.’s Ministry of Environment, in partnership with the B.C. Conservation Foundation and the Union of B.C. Municipalities, has designed a Bear Smart community program. The program’s goal is to reduce or prevent human-bear conflict through information and education about bear-proof waste management and by implementing Bear Smart’s rules and recommendations.
