مرا در نبرد با نفس، این دشمن درون، صلابت و قوت بخش.
که نفس جبان و بزدل
که پیوسته با صدایی رقّت بار،
از من آسایش و لذت می طلبد،
این نفس من، این سر حلقۀ خیانت پیشگان با من،
این تهی مغـزترین دوستِ من
و مهلک ترین دشمن من،
و این بندِ پای من، به هر جا که می روم (و از او هیچ پای گریز نیست).
با اینهمه، یگانه ای هست که تنها او می تواند
میان من و نفس فاصله بیندازد و بین من و او حجاب شود
و این بار سنگین را از دوش من بیفکند،
یوغ او را از گردن من بگشاید و مرا آزاد کند
